The Consequences of One-Night Stands
One-night stands are often seen as common and ‘the trendy thing to do’. Some people purposely seek one-night stands and some ‘fall’ into one, usually when alcohol is involved. Hollywood often glamorizes one-night stands in movies where two people hook up and have an unbridled night of fun–recreational sex. In reality, there are many consequences to one-night stands.

Hollywood often glamorizes one-night stands in movies where two people hook up and have an unbridled night of fun–recreational sex. In reality, there are many consequences to one-night stands.
The stranger you choose to have a one-night stand with may be charming and seemingly trustworthy. Anyone can fake a personality. You see this on the TV screen each day–they are called actors. In real life, people often write their own script to get what they want. Behind that charm of a stranger could be someone who is married, has children or is even a criminal on the run. This stranger may be notorious for having one-night stands. That means your chance of catching a deadly disease is even stronger.
How gratifying can sex be with a stranger, when the consequences can be so great? What drives a person to get involved in a one-night stand? Do they have a need so deep to be desired that they settle for such an empty and superfical experience? Are they trying to follow the ‘trend’ without thought of what could happen during the one-night stand or thereafter?
What purpose does a one-night stand serve…other than instant gratification, maybe an ego boost? How gratifying can it be to expose, such an intimate part of one’s self, with someone who could probably care less. A stranger won’t know your body well enough to please it and certainly not enough to make up for the possible consequences of STD’s, unplanned pregnancy or the possibility of a crazy person who may do you extreme harm.
Chances are, this stranger didn’t choose you because you are special, but because you are all too willing to give them what they want. How meaningful is this one-night stand in comparison to your self-respect and safety? Isn’t it odd that some people have no problem having sex with a stranger, but couldn’t begin to have a meaningful conversation with this same stranger?
Before getting involved in a one-night stand, think about ‘why’. What do you expect to gain from the experience and what is the potential to lose? Each day we can choose to go down a destructive path or a constructive path. Which path will bring you greater and lasting fulfillment? Which path may take you into the unknown with dire consequences?
